Tips To Improve Conversion Rates From Your Website

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

When you improve the conversion rate on your site, you raise the percentage of visitors to your site who become customers, purchasing your product or subscribing to your service. Raising conversion rates is, or should be, the goal of every ecommerce marketer or business owner.

The average conversion rate for ecommerce and subscription based sites is widely debated. Most say that it falls anywhere between 2% and 8%. Not very high, is it? Even the sites with the most targeted traffic can claim only 15% to 20%. And those numbers are great! So how do you go about turning your little .5% into a number with double digits?

You can try a hundred different gimmicks touted by marketing gurus and business experts to drive traffic to your site, but if you don’t invest in some serious web analytics, you’ll never know what’s working and what isn’t. So the first step to improving your conversion rate is to use web analytics to track your traffic. How many visit your site daily? How many leave immediately? Where did these visitors come from? How many are return visitors? With web analytics, you can track all of this information and upgrade your site, making changes in advertising and content to improve your rate of conversion.

Tracking information isn’t a one time thing. Consistently measuring the effectiveness of your site is essential to keeping up with changes in the marketplace and consumer interest.

For example, one thing you can consistently do to improve your conversion rate is to include your business contact information and a link for emailed questions on every page of your site. This way, your customers don’t have to waste time surfing through your site when they have a question. They can ask it immediately, before they forget or get bored looking and move onto the next site.

Another way to improve your conversion rate is to make sure that your site is easy to navigate. Are there any pages that have a much lower visitor count than others on your site? Is it because the links that are bringing them there are inappropriately placed? Is the content as compelling as it could be? Or is it that your visitors simply can’t find it very easily?

Improving your conversion rate may be as simple as making sure that your site is accessible to everyone, even those who don’t reach your site through Windows XP or an Internet Explorer browser. Upgrading your technology so that it works for anyone who would like to visit could help your conversion rate immensely.

Those who work in a popular field or industry, providing a service or industry that is offered by many businesses, will also have a problem with their conversion rate. Why should customers choose you over your competition? Just like in the world of brick and mortar shops, this too applies to online ecommerce. You have to make yourself stand out. How is what you offer different from everyone else? What is your niche in the industry? Offering lower prices isn’t enough. There must be something special that you have that no one else does. This will not only bring new visitors to your site but help convert the ones you have into customers.

Next, what do your customers need (besides your product or service)? The knowledge to make the right decisions about their purchase. If you offer them that knowledge in the form of informative articles and content on your site, then you become a valued resource as well as an e-tailer. Bookmarking your site for the information you have to offer is one way to make a one time visitor into a next time customer and therefore make your conversion rate percentage rise.

Secured loans in UK

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

At some or the other stage of our lives we need to fund a need that we can’t manage with our current cash flow. These needs could be a vacation abroad, a new house, a car or a family function. This is the stage when loans come to our help.

Types of loans:

Loans could be secured or unsecured. Unsecured loans are not backed by any security or collateral. Credit cards are examples of unsecured loans. Secured loans are backed by a collateral or security and hence the term ’secured’. The collateral could be a house in case of a home loan or the vehicle in case of a vehicle loan.

When does a borrower need these loans?

UK residents borrow billions of pounds every year. Borrowers take these loans to meet the high standard of living which they may not be able to do at their current income level. It is a very practical option to take a loan these days. The interest rates are low, easy repayment option are available and above all if a borrower does a bit of shopping around he/she can get the best deal.

Interest rates on a secured loan:

In case of secured loans the interest rate is known as annual percentage rate or APR. APR in case of a particular loan depends on a host of factors like borrower’s credit history, loan amount, loan duration and some times on the lending institution.
The interest rates are the lowest on secured personal loans in the UK. APR typically ranges from 6% to 25%. As a borrower you may get the best interest rate if you have a very good credit history backed by collateral. Real estate properties command the lowest APR since the property serves as a collateral and there is less depreciation in the property. Other forms of loans like vehicle loans command an interest rate that is greater than that in case of real estate.

How is the collateral handled by the lender?

The lenders do not interfere with the property or collateral being used by the borrower. Only when borrowers do not pay up the installment amount over a long period of time and after repeated reminders the lenders take the possession of the collateral. Getting a secured loan in UK is cheap and very convenient. Secured loans are economical for the borrowers because of the low interest rates.

How does a secured loan create a win-win situation for everyone?

If you have no established credit history or a bad credit history then secured loans are the type of loans that you should look out for. Immigrants to UK might face this problem because of a lack of an established credit history for them. Lending institutions find it convenient to give out secured loans rather than unsecured loans by virtue of the collateral that the borrowers offer. The borrowers are also less likely to default the loan because of the fear of losing their collateral. This way secured loans in UK are creating a win-win situation for everyone.
A borrower with a good credit history, collateral and good income sources can expect loan amounts to the tune of 125% of his/her property value.

How customer oriented is the whole process of obtaining a loan?

In UK the borrowers have very flexible borrowing options which are quite similar to the unsecured loans. The lenders have also started offering web based application methods

March Madness

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

If you didn’t get enough madness this weekend, or were out of town, don’t sweat it. You get to go mad all over again! This is a unique week as teams play for the NCAA title while those that missed the Big Dance have to settle for an NIT title. One of the great parts of March tournament play is the amount of sidebars that can pop up with respect to handicapping. That is, tournament play offers bettors many different factors to analyze and digest.

With the games meaning so much in the Big Dance, this is a great time to mention how important defense is. Strong defense requires all out effort from players, and we are now reaching that point in the year where the meaning of games is far more intense. Simply put, you either win, or go home. That’s different than the regular season and even far different from the conference tournament play that we just witnessed. Many teams that lost, such as UConn and North Carolina, still knew they’d be playing again this week. But now, it’s win or your season — no matter how great it might have been — is over.

Don’t be surprised to see a lot more fierce defensive games with so much on the line now. A good example of what to expect just took place in the SEC and Conference USA title games. Memphis and UAB, two strong offensive teams, played lights-out defense in a 57-46 Memphis win. That went under the total by 41 points! And Florida beat South Carolina for the SEC title, 49-47, in a game going under the total of 130. It’s more common to see close games and intense defensive battles.

Two years ago, UConn went 2-1 under the total in the Big East tournament, holding Notre Dame to 58, Villanova to 67 and Pitt to 58, one that started a 5-1 under the total run the rest of March. Wisconsin, too, turned on the defense that season, going 2-1 under the total in the tourney, knocking off Illinois 70-58 as a one-point dog in the title game. This is the time of the year for defense!

In fact, you can find a whole bunch of teams that just got invited to the Big Dance that can really turn up the defense when they want to — teams like Wisconsin, NC Wilmington, Southern Illinois, Texas A&M, UCLA, Memphis, Pitt, Indiana, Kentucky, Utah State, Air Force, George Mason, Georgetown and Pacific.

And many have already been great ‘under’ plays against the spread: UCLA is 18-11 under the total, Southern Illinois is 19-13 under (23-8 under last season), and LSU is 17-10 under the total. Over the next month you will see upsets, fantastic finishes and plenty of rugged defense. Because March is money time! Good luck, as always…Al McMordie.

Golf Tips

Friday, June 13th, 2008

Golf tips are nothing more than the thought you hold in your head as you swing your golf club. Whether the golf tip comes from another player or a golf pro or that really great player you met on your last Las Vegas golf vacation – what matters is how well the golf tip works.

Your mind and body operate in a strange fashion. It seems that your body does it’s best work when your mind isn’t in the way. By that I mean you aren’t trying to think through your action you just let it happen. The secret is learning how to make this a habit instead of a rare glimpse of greatness.

So the first golf tip is learn how to turn off your mind and allow your body to swing without conscious interference. If you’ve learned how to swing correctly then your body knows how.

A great way to make this happen is to think back to a time when you made a perfect swing. Remember the scene in detail. Then remember how it felt. See it play out in your minds eye and feel the way you felt then. Now swing. This simple exercise really works.

Your golf grip is vitally important to your performance on the greens. Good golf starts with a good grip.

If you watch professional golfers you will
see that most of their grips are very similar.

You have to find the best hand position and grip for you. It’s something that has to be learned . The most important thing is consistency. Once you find the grip that works for you stick with it.

Only when you can put your hands on the club
exactly the same way every time can you really tell
if your golf grip is working for you. Learn and
practice gripping the golf club the same way every time.

Your second golf tip is learn to grip the club the same every time.

Always select a club that will make you ask
yourself “How much do I need to back off of this swing?”. Use the 75% Rule. Make a 3/4 backswing and follow through, focusing on controlling the direction and distance of the shot.

A heavier club will give you the power you need refine your control and aim. Practice with heavier clubs and you will be able to swing with more control because you won’t be putting all your strength into it.

You will find yourself making consistently better
contact with the 3/4 swing and probably start
hitting the ball farther with your controlled swing
than with the full whack.

Golf tip number three is use a heavier club and reduce your swing to 75% – you’ll get better power and greater control.

Understanding Inbound Links and their Benefits

Friday, June 13th, 2008

Link building has arguably been the most important factor and one of the core focus areas for most companies and webmasters wanting to improve their rankings within search engines. It’s no secret that every major search engine heavily weighs inbound links for their search results, including natural occurrences of those links, anchor text being used within their search results, and quantity or quality of those links.

Within this article, I’ll explain exactly what you need to do to successfully market a page or pages within your web site and achieve a good balance of quality inbound links. For simplicity, I will discuss anchor text variations, most effective text to use within links, and where links should be acquired, i.e. directories, blogs, or other niche sites.

The first concept to grasp is that there are many types of links that can be targeted, not just an anchor text link with two or three words to a particular page of your site. Let’s start with the following three types:

1) URL or Web Page Links – these links are directed to a URL of a web site. This type of link to a specific page does increase the general authority of that particular page and is beneficial to use to increase the natural occurrences of inbound links to a web site.

2) Name Links – these links include the anchor text of the particular page or perhaps even the title of the page’s context. An example might be a page with the anchor text of “SEO Position” where the URL used points to our own company home page. Another example might be the words “link building benefits,” where the URL points to a particular page of our site that explains that topic. In this example the URL does not necessarily have to have “link building benefits” in the URL to be effective as long as page context is targeted for those keywords.

The later of the two above is one of the most used types of links from directories or resource-type sites who simply describe the “landing page” with more intuitive text for the user to understand the page’s contents.

3) Exact Anchor Text – this type of inbound link points to and describes exactly what a page is about using specific targeted keywords. An example of this linking method would be the anchor text “content writing” which points to a specific page about content writing and targets specific search terms. These types of text links can be confused with name links mentioned above, although they are more targeted and commonly used by webmasters wanting to build ranking for particular terms and pages. Name links happen more randomly, making them seem more natural to search engines.

The second are of inbound links include the locations in which links are acquired. There are many types of locations for links to be effective, but I’ll keep the list to just a few of the more common areas.

1) Contextual Linking – links in this category are simply links within any body of context or paragraph/sentence where the link appears. This type of link is perhaps the most beneficial since search engines have the ability to understand context wrapping around the text link, thus weighing it more heavily as a resource or authority.

2) Directory Links – simply achieved by the “title” field that almost every directory asks for when submitting your URL, these types of links appear on categorized pages and often include a simple anchor text with a description after it. Directory links can be beneficial for your web site if understood and used properly. Often, search engines do not give much emphasis on directory submissions alone and some directory submissions within certain directories can be ignored almost completely by the big three – Google, MSN, and Yahoo.

3) Site Wide Links or Run of Site (ROS) – These links were used by many webmasters and companies a year or two ago and are still used today. The effectiveness of these links are less weighted because search engines now understand that, let’s say, link to site “widgetmaker.com” appears on every page on the right-hand side in the navigation area, thus saturating its effectiveness. Many of these types of links can be beneficial for direct traffic if placed well, but will often only be counted once or twice rather than dozens or hundreds of times no matter how many times they occur on a web site.

For a successful link marketing campaign, the more natural looking means better results in the search engines. Understanding the differences between the different types listed above can be a real advantage since almost every site that ranks well, and ranks well for long-term, includes a mixture of all of the above mentioned linking methods.

This means directory submissions using varying anchor text to different pages of your web site, links within the context of other related pages, like articles or blog entries, and using a variety of anchor text to give more weight for particular pages in the search engines.

We find that the most successful link building campaigns include targeting main keywords first, for example, “Internet marketing” first then more concise keyword related to that term like North Carolina Internet marketing.” This is more like a funnel effect, giving weight to lesser searched terms related to the main phrase targeted.

They’re Not Called “Killer Apps” For Nothin’

MediaWise is an excellent resource for keeping tabs on the trends and conditions of video and technology aimed at young people. And they’ve recently published a 10-year assessment of the game industry (online and personal products), concluding that progress not withstanding, “killer apps” (the most popular software in a given category) still tend towards the violent and ugly aspects of life.

Nevertheless, they do remain optimistic that things are changing. And in particular they are pleased that an international rating system is moving the game industry closer to an understanding of the impact these products actually have on the thinking and behavior of our young (and increasingly older) players.

Recommended Video Games for Kids

In addition to their assessment of the decade, they also published their 2005 Video Game Report Card. In that, they identify the Good and the Bad of gaming options, using their standards about the social and learning value. MediaWise recommends the following games for children and teens

  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (E 10+)
  • The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer (E 10+)
  • Peter Jackson’s King Kong (T)
  • Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap (E)
  • The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe (T)
  • Sly 3: Honor Amongst Thieves (E 10+)
  • We Love Katamari (E)
  • Sid Meier’s Pirates! (E)
  • Dance Dance Revolution ULTRAMIX3 (E 10+)
  • Backyard Baseball 2005 (E)

  • On the serious Gamer’s side of the story, a website called GameSpot has posted its year-end assessment of downloads or actually played games. They have a wide range of “Best of” categories under such interesting titles as:

  • Best Original Music
  • Most Surprisingly Good
  • Best Story
  • Best Voice Acting
  • Best Creative License
  • Best Use of Sweat

  • “Danger, Warning!

Obviously, Gamers take this stuff seriously when it comes to fun and artistic expression. But interestingly, GameSpot’s 2005 popular play list somewhat mirrors the “Parent Alert” warnings provided by MediaWise. Most of the popular games from GameSpot are rated Mature with warnings on the store packaging or Web portals. Their list includes:

  • Civilization IV
  • Ninja Gaiden Black
  • Resident Evil 4
  • Battlefield 2
  • Mario Kant DS
  • Fifa 06
  • Need for Speed
  • Grand Theft Auto
  • FEAR

  • Food Fight!

Interestingly, a game of remarkable popularity called Food-Force.com was released and enhanced over the last year by the United Nations. It simulates the experience of the player being part of a collaborative team of experts who come together on a dangerous adventure to feed the hungry and malnourished in a fictional nation. As the players go through this adventure, they learn fascinating facts about the true issues of food policies and practices worldwide.

Perhaps it says something that while this online game received little marketing attention (and was not even reviewed by MediaWise), some 2 million people downloaded the game in its first six months. By comparison, the top games of GameSpot seldom exceeded 50,000 downloads.

  • Fair Trade Fundraisers

    Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Organizations everywhere are starting to see the benefits of staging certain types of fundraisers. As you may have discovered through trial-and-error, some fundraisers are simply more successful than others. We all want to raise as much money as we can for our respective organizations, but there are times when we ought to give pause to other considerations.

Coffee fundraisers have been massively successful in the United States and beyond. It should come as no surprise, mind you. Everyone loves coffee, especially really good coffee. It is estimated that over 200 million people in the United States alone drink coffee on a daily basis. At approximately one dollar per cup, you can imagine how staggering the profits can be. Organizations have an excellent opportunity to tap into this market, and to brew up massive revenues for their respective ventures.

The difficult part of doing coffee fundraisers, is convincing people to compromise their morning coffee routines. It may sound absurd, but many people feel very passionately about the coffee they drink. From what I have been told by some of our readers, Canadians are absolutely fanatic about Tim Horton’s coffee. The challenge for people involved in fundraising, is to convince people to try something new. We have to appeal to their thoughtful side. It is for charity, after all.

One of our friends has had tremendous success by putting a new twist on the traditional coffee fundraiser. Instead of offering people unimpressive gift boxes of coffee, why not consider selling bags of Fair Trade Coffee? If you are not aware of the Fair Trade movement, you should be. It is essentially an effort to ensure that farmers in developing countries are properly compensated for their labor and their products. The movement also tries to address issues regarding the environmental impact of certain farming practices, as well as local economic sustainability.

There is a significant percentage of the population in America that truly cares about what is happening in the world today. The environmental movement has been going strong for decades now, and people have become both active and aware of the issues that affect citizens in America and beyond. These conditions create a wonderful opportunity for fundraisers, as we can give people an opportunity to support two wonderful causes; the Fair Trade movement and your organization! Let your conscience guide you in your fundraising efforts, and help make trade fair.

How To Lose Weight Without Really Trying

    Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Sound impossible? I think not. You’ll find plenty of opportunities to slip these easy weight loss tips into your routine and watch the numbers on the scale go down. If you’ve already begun to lose weight, these tips will maximize your efforts and speed up results. The bottom line is that one pound is equivalent to 3,500 calories. Whether you make slight changes to your diet or increase exercise levels, a deficit of 500 calories a day will lead to a loss of about a pound a week for you without really trying! Here are some tips you can try:

    • Chew a piece of gum. Researchers recently discovered that chewing sugar-free gum all day increases your metabolic rate by about 20 percent. It speeds up the digestive system, burns more calories, and sometimes stops a craving. This method alone could help to burn off more than 10 pounds a year.

    • Pack a lunch. Dining out a lot (5 or more times per week) can make you eat more than if you dine out less frequently.

    • Sprinkle flax on your cereal. High-fiber, ground flax seed can help curb your appetite and also eliminate calories. You can add it to yogurt, a muffin or your oatmeal. It is readily available in health food stores or online.

    • Brush your teeth. Brushing your teeth after a meal seems to send a signal to your body that you’re done eating, and it makes your breath fresh without relying on gum and mints made with sugar that can cause you to crave something sweet. You can also brush your teeth instead of eating when you feel the craving to eat something you know you shouldn’t.

    • Get rid of the remotes and other labor-saving devices. You could easily burn a lot of extra calories a day if you stop using the TV/VCR remote, garage door openers, electric can openers, riding mowers, and other things made to cut down on manual work.

    • Smell your food. When you really have a craving for something like a fresh-baked cookie, try this little trick to satisfy yourself: Indulge in the smell for 30 seconds and then place a small bite on the tip of your tongue for another 30 seconds. Savoring the smell and taste can help you stay in control of food.

    • Post inspirational messages. To keep yourself on track and motivated, place quotes in strategic spots where you might need some motivation: on the refrigerator, TV, dashboard of the car, or your computer. Some suggestions: “Eat to Live; Don’t Live to Eat” and “Nothing tastes as good as thin feels.”

    • Eat more soup. Begin your lunch or dinner with soup and it may help you eat less during the main meal. Soup helps curb your appetite and also forces you to eat more slowly. You are more likely to pay attention to what you. Eat soups are that are low in fat and calories such as broth-based soups. Avoid creamy soups like clam chowder or cheese and bacon. Choose vegetable to work in some extra nutrients.

    • Drink lots of water. Drinking about eight glasses of water every day raises your metabolism slightly and allows your body to avoid retaining extra fluid. Drink a glass of water before and during every meal and before and after workouts.

    • Do not skip meals. Eating small, frequent meals help to balance your calorie intake throughout the day and also keeps your blood sugar level balanced. Instead of eating 3 big meals, try to eat 5 – 6 smaller meals throughout the day. This way you won’t overeat at meals because you’re less hungry. Skipping meals hurts your diet efforts because it causes your body to hold onto its stored food instead of burning it off.

    • Stop avoiding exercise. Think about how you can work more activity into your life. Why not park your car farther away from your door at work or the mall? Take the steps to your apartment or office instead of the elevator. Walk to someone’s desk in another department to ask them a question instead of e-mailing them. You can even wear a pedometer and set yourself a goal to walk a certain number of miles per day.

    • Reduce caffeine intake. Reduce your consumption of caffeine to lose weight faster. Caffeine leads to an increase of insulin in your body that stops the burning of your stored fat. This is a simple chemical reaction in your body that you can change easily by eliminating caffeine.

    • Plan Your Eating. Have a snack, such as fruit, an hour before you go to a planned party or dinner. This way you will feel full and be less likely to overeat.

Keep striving for your weight loss goals. The small changes that we make every single day that will make a big change in the long run!

How To Find The Best Cellular Phone Service Deal

    Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

If you’ve spent any significant amount of time studying cell phone plans and the latest cell phones with all of their neat little gizmos and gadgets then you know how difficult and frustrating it can be when trying to locate and confidently purchase the best cellular phone deal. Then once you’ve found the right phone and cellular plan you have to decide on how many years to take with your new cell phone service plan. Normally the more years you take the better the deal offered. For instance in some cases you get a hefty rebate check or even a free new camera cell phone. Again the decisions can be difficult and the choices seem limitless. Fortunately there are a few simple ways to avoid the headaches and hassles that normally come with trying to find the best cellular phone deal online.

Perhaps one of the easiest ways to determine what plan and phone is right for you and best suited to your calling needs is to talk with some of your friends, family and co-workers. Many of them will probably possess a nice cell phone and would be more then happy to assist you by explaining all of the details (good or bad) in regards to their cell phone and plan. Make sure to listen to their information thoroughly and be sure t o ask plenty of questions. What makes this a good idea is based on human nature and the natural tendency to talk and desire/need to be listened by someone. With that said people who are [leased with their cell phone plan and love their cell phone will happily tell you all about its great features and why you should get the same cell phone. On the other hand if they hate their service and think their cell phone is a piece of junk they will be equally as happy to vent their frustrations too you, advising you to stay away from their cell phone provider.

Whether their advice provides the good or bad details it should be enough of a starting point, allowing you to then do some additional research online to easily find the best cell phone service deal that can be purchased online. One word of advice would be to spend a few weeks doing your online research. What you will find out is that the cell phone service providers are a fickle group and they will routinely change their cellular offers on a monthly or weekly basis – sometimes even on a daily basis. Armed with that knowledge you should be able to find a suitable cellular phone plan that meets your calling needs at a price you’re comfortable paying.

Shopping online for a cell phone and service plan also offers the other following benefit. Many online cell phone and plan providers offer the opportunity for you to type in your address and zip code. Once this information is entered into their system they will quickly display a list of all the cell phone service providers in your local area along with their money saving offers, rates and phones. Remember if all else fails and you’re still having trouble deciding on which is the right cell phone and plan for you needs you can always call the tool free number that is usually provided on their website in order to speak to a friendly and helpful cellular phone customer service representative who will be able to easily and quickly assist you with your cell phone buying dilemma.

Timothy Gorman is a successful Webmaster and publisher of Cellular-Phone-Solutions.com. He provides more cell phone advice to include ways to find the best cellular phone service deal that you can research in your pajamas on his website.

Keep The Clogs Out Of Your Kitchen Sinks

    Sunday, June 8th, 2008

One day last week my kitchen sink got clogged, while frustrating I didn’t think it was going to be a big deal.

I just grabbed the Liquid Plumber I had bought for just such an occasion, and then presto. Nothing.

So we head off to Wal-Mart, my daughter in her jammies since she was just about to go to bed. I found the Draino, my daughter suggested to get two just in case and after the Liquid Plumber hadn’t worked I though maybe I better.

Tried it and it didn’t work, so then I decided to let it really have some time to work over night. Still in the morning a clog.

So I call a plumber and he had the clog fixed in no time, and he gave me a bit of advice that I am going to be using now.

He told me once a week to fill up both my sinks and then let the water out on both at the same time. He said the cyclonic action of the water would continue all the way through my pipes and keep me from having a clog.

He said as long as you don’t put a lot of grease down your drain you should never have a clog.

So I thought I would share this tip with all of you. I figure it doesn’t cost anything and takes less than 5 minutes so why not.

Another tip someone else had given me that I forgot to ask the plumber about is to take a can of salt every month and flush it down your toilet. They told me it would keep tree roots from growing toward your pipes. So since I have trees in my backyard I salt the toilet once a month too.
