Poker Slang: ‘Coffeehousing’
‘Coffeehousing’ is a poker term referring to players at the table who run their mouths too often, sometimes to the detriment of the game. Often, especially when playing poker en ligne among friends or when drinking is involved, players can get so focused on having fun and making conversation, that they don’t pay attention to the pace of the action and to who acts when, thus causing the ring to slow down.
Though it is certainly to everyone’s benefit to have a good, pleasant time at the poker table, it is equally important to remember, except in the most informal of friendly games, that the reason everyone is there is to play cards. Slowing down the game isn’t fun for anyone, and nobody wants to hear your bad beat story from last week when it’s on you and we’re all waiting to move around.
Another important no-no in the realm of table talk is to observe the standard that if you aren’t in the hand, you shouldn’t be discussing the action. Though it can be tempting to make comments on others’ play, especially in the instance of donkeys, keeping your thoughts to yourself when it does not affect you is just another aspect of good poker etiquette.
