US Mobile Broadband Providers to Face Net Neutrality Rules

The uproar over the disadvantages of net neutrality regulations has been rekindled by a proposed step up in the severity of the regulations to be implemented soon. Never a popular proposal with providers, the rules with their new developments are facing a lot of criticism from the internet industry, especially from mobile broadband providers.

The FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski is bearing the brunt of vociferous complaints against what the providers believe are unduly severe restrictions which will be imposed on them once the new net neutrality regulations are formalized.

The chairman is taking steps to formalize the regulations that were formulated a few years back to ensure free and fair information disbursal over the internet. The idea behind the regulations was that no provider should be able to decide or select the content, software or applications that their customers can access. This was expected to enable equitable distribution of data across networks.

However, providers challenged the utility of such regulations saying that it would hamper growth, innovation and fresh investment in the sector. They stated that such restrictions would hinder normal and necessary management activities undertaken by providers.

It now appears that the chairman may go ahead with more stringent regulations for mobile operators. These are set to be the most comprehensive net neutrality initiatives imposed yet in the US. Once these rules are implemented and formalized, wireless providers will have to toe the same line as their fixed line counterparts. Mobile broadband providers are making their dissatisfaction felt in no uncertain terms, claiming that this will preclude optimum utilisation of the limited available spectrum.
